Celebrating Polish Kielbasa: Tradition, Family, and Flavor
Celebrating Polish Kielbasa – Tradition, Family and Flavor

Welcome to My Kitchen!
There’s something magical about the smell of polish kielbasa sizzling in a skillet—it instantly takes me back to my grandmother’s kitchen in Pennsylvania. The kitchen was always filled with laughter, stories, and the comforting aroma of home-cooked meals. For me, kielbasa isn’t just food; it’s a tradition, a memory, and a way to bring family together.
Growing up in a small coal town, our family gatherings revolved around simple, hearty dishes that told stories of our heritage. My grandmother was the heart of our kitchen, and every meal she made was a celebration of love and resourcefulness. Whether it was a holiday feast or a casual Sunday dinner, kielbasa was always there—sometimes smoked, sometimes fresh, always delicious.
Today, I want to share not just our favorite polish kielbasa recipe, but the family traditions and memories that make it so special. Whether you have Polish roots, love good food, or just enjoy a taste of nostalgia, I hope you’ll find something here to warm your heart and inspire your own kitchen adventures.
So, pull up a chair, grab a cup of tea, and let’s take a journey through tradition, family, and flavor together!

Sharing Polish Kielbasa and Family Memories
So, how did polish kielbasa become such a cherished part of our family story? Let me take you back to those early days in Pennsylvania, where every meal was a celebration and every recipe had a story behind it.

What Makes Polish Kielbasa Special?
It’s about the ingredients that make it home. Some use Italian seasonings, some use spices that make it extra hot, others make it just simple and mild tasting. Sometimes it’s the herbs you grow in your garden—a lot of the small-town Pennsylvania people grew their own herbs and vegetables. It made it easier, fresher, and healthier. In addition, it was about not wasting the food and using it wisely. My grandparents grew up in the Depression and times were tough; a lot of the traditions we did were cost-effective and wise.

- Some families use Italian seasonings; others prefer it hot or mild

- Durable Cutting Board – Easy to clean and sturdy enough for everyday use.
- Sharp Chef Knife – Cuts through chicken, beef, pork, and vegetables quickly and cleanly.
- Spatula – Necessary item for mixing and when stirring food on stove. Part of my kitchen essentials list.
- Thawing Board – Another essential item to thaw meats quickly. This little gem saves me so much time.
- Small prep bowls – Makes it easy to premeasure items and set aside for easy pouring without having to stop.

Our Classic Kielbasa Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 lb. Polish kielbasa (pork and chicken flavored)
- ½ lb., mild Italian sausage
- 1 medium onion sweet Vidalia
- 3 medium bell peppers (2 bags of mini peppers)
- ¼ tsp black pepper (ground)
- ¾ tsp basil, fresh is best (dried can be used)
- 2 tbsp avocado oil
- 2 tbsp garlic (freshly minced)
- salt
Instructions
Gather Items:
- Pull out all items you need for preparation.

- Heat Skillet on medium heat with avocado oil (or olive oil depending on your preference.

Prep and Chop:
- Slice sausage into bite sized pieces.

- Slice onions.
- Slice peppers.
- Chop and mince fresh garlic.
Begin Cooking:
- Add sausage to heated skillet.

- Let cook for 5-10 minutes. Juices will come out. YOU can discard or keep for added flavor and it soaks into the additional serving items.
- Add sliced onions.

- Cook onions with sausage until onions are translucent color. About 5 minutes
- During this time, add garlic and let it cook with sausage and onions.
- Add peppers. (We like our peppers slightly hard, so we don't cook this long. It depends on your taste as to how long you will cook this. For me, the peppers are cooked about 3 minutes.

Remove and Serve:
- Remove from heat.

- Serve with rice or noodle or as a side dish.

Notes
- Plain rice
- Rice with cilantro and lime
- Rice with a chicken flavor since this recipe has a pork and chicken kielbasa
- Keeping the juices adds to the flavor of the rice
- Draining, rinsing, and drying the sausage before adding onions is a healthy approach
- Mixing sausage flavors helps tone down the spiciness of the hot sausage
- Can serve on a hoagie/large bun to make it different
- Serve at a backyard gathering to provide something different from the regular hot dog and hamburgers people are used to seeing
- A nice side dish for a potluck dinner gathering
