The Striker by Monica McCarty: A Highland Guard Review You’ll Love

There are books you enjoy. And then there are books you can’t put down — the ones that pull you back again and again, even when you know exactly how the story ends.

The Striker by Monica McCarty is one of those books for me. And the way I first experienced it made it even better.

I listened to it on Audible first — Bluetooth straight to my ears while cooking, driving, just moving through my day. Then I went back and read the paperback. More than once. And before our trip to Scotland — the one that took us to Oban and the Isle of Kerrera — I picked it up again. Knowing I was going to stand on those same shores made every page feel different.

That’s what a great book does. It stays with you. And if you’re just discovering Monica McCarty’s world, here is where to begin – start with The Chief.

    ⚔️ Plot & Characters

The Striker follows Eoin MacLean, one of Robert the Bruce’s most trusted men — a warrior and strategist who sees every situation like a chessboard. His primary weapon is a battle axe. His real weapon is his mind. He is Robert’s cousin, and that loyalty runs bone deep.

The woman at the center of his story is Margaret “Maggie” MacDowell — and from the first page, she is impossible not to love.

Their story isn’t clean or simple. But their story is far from simple. It is messy and painful and full of misunderstanding — the kind that happens when everyone around two people seems determined to keep them apart. Her father. His mother. Her best friend. His trusted companion Finn. Even circumstances conspired against them at every turn.

And yet. They deserved to be together. From the very first page you know it. By the last page you feel it in your bones.

🗡️ Eoin – The Man Who Almost Lost Everything

Eoin is brilliant. Steady. Fiercely loyal to Robert the Bruce and to the Highland Guard. He sees the battlefield before it happens and moves people like pieces on a chessboard.

But he was quick to judge Maggie without looking at the facts first. When the failed battle happened — set in motion by information that reached the wrong ears — Eoin blamed her. He didn’t stop to ask questions and didn’t look deeper. He just believed the worst.

That wound between them carried through the entire story. And that wound shaped every choice he made afterward.

The turning point for me was the moment Eoin stopped the arrow that could have killed his son. That split second — pure instinct, pure love — cracked something open in him. The realization came flooding in. Not slowly. All at once.

And then the medicine scene. Eoin flat out refused to take it from Helen. Stubborn as stone. But Maggie stood her ground quietly and just waited. She knew him. She knew exactly how long it would take before he gave in. He took the medicine. That small moment said everything about who they were together. 😊

💕 Maggie – She Endured Everything and Still Stood Tall

Maggie is one of my favorite heroines in the entire Highland Guard series.

She didn’t let anyone deter her — not her father who locked her in her room, not the friend who betrayed her without a second thought, not Eoin’s mother, not the circumstances that kept stacking against her. But what changed everything was what happened next.

She tolerated so much and felt alone for so long. Showing her strength, she raised their son by herself with strength and grace, never asking for what wasn’t freely given.

What moved me most was her mind. Maggie couldn’t read — but she had a gift for numbers that no one recognized or valued the way they should have. When the sisters taught her to read, she didn’t just absorb the gift quietly. She used it – uncovered a merchant who was exploiting the kitchen sisters and stopped it. She took what she was given and immediately turned it into protection for others.

That is who Maggie was. Quietly fierce. Steadily strong.

When she broke out of the window after her father locked her in — when she swam out to light the beacon to save the men — when she saw Eoin’s helmet and believed he was dead — I held my breath every time. Even rereading it. Even knowing how it ended.

🌿 The Betrayal That Made Everything Worse

Throughout the story, Eoin believed Finn was his friend. Trusted him completely. And Finn played both sides the entire time — feeding information, working against Eoin quietly, letting Maggie take the blame for things that weren’t her fault. And because of that, their reunion carried real weight.

Finn was jealous. He wanted more for himself and used Eoin’s trust to get it. When the truth finally came out it reframed everything — every misunderstanding, every accusation, every moment Eoin had blamed Maggie instead of looking harder at the people closest to him.

It made the reconciliation feel earned. Nothing about their path back to each other was easy. But that’s what made it so satisfying.

    🌍 Reading This Before Scotland

Before our trip to Oban and the Isle of Kerrera, I read The Striker again. Standing on those shores later — seeing the water, the coastline, the landscape that Monica McCarty brought so vividly to life — felt like stepping into the pages.

If you’re planning a trip to Scotland and you love this series, read The Striker before you go. It changes the way you see the land.

    ✍️ What Worked for Me

    • Eoin’s strategic mind paired against Maggie’s quiet emotional intelligence — they balanced each other perfectly
    • The betrayal storyline felt genuinely shocking even on a reread
    • Maggie’s strength never felt forced or dramatic — it was just who she was
    • The medicine scene — small, perfect, and completely them 😊
    • The son storyline added real emotional weight beyond just the romance
    • Monica McCarty’s historical detail grounded every scene without slowing the story

    🪶 Final Thoughts

The Striker is the kind of book that reminds you why you fell in love with historical romance in the first place.

Everything went wrong for Eoin and Maggie. Her father. Her best friend. His mother. His trusted companion. The failed battle. The years apart. The son raised alone. The blame placed where it didn’t belong.

And through all of it — they deserved to be together. You felt it from the beginning. And when they finally found their way back to each other, it felt like exactly what the story had been building toward all along. And that’s why this book stays with me.

I couldn’t put it down the first time. I’ve gone back to it more than once. And I’ll probably read it again. That’s the highest compliment I can give a book. 💙 I’ve also reviewed The Hawk and The Ranger.

🌺 Why I Chose This Book

I wanted a Highland romance with real emotional stakes — characters who earned their ending rather than falling into it. The Striker delivered that and more. Eoin and Maggie’s story is one I keep coming back to, and it’s one I’d recommend to anyone who loves Scottish historical romance done right.

Frequently Asked Questions – The Striker by Monica McCarty

What is The Striker by Monica McCarty about?

The Striker is Book 10 of the Highland Guard series. It follows Eoin MacLean, a brilliant strategist and warrior in Robert the Bruce’s elite Highland Guard, and Margaret “Maggie” MacDowell, the woman he wrongly blamed for a devastating betrayal. Their road back to each other is complicated by family interference, a trusted friend’s treachery, and years of separation — but their love never really disappeared.

Is The Striker a standalone or part of a series?

It’s part of the 12-book Highland Guard series by Monica McCarty. While it can be read alone, reading earlier books in the series adds depth to the characters and the Highland Guard world.

Do I need to read the Highland Guard books in order before The Striker?

Reading in order is recommended but not required. The Striker is Book 10, so earlier books build the world and introduce recurring characters. That said, Monica McCarty gives enough context that new readers won’t feel completely lost. To learn more, see my complete Highland Guard Reading Order.

Is The Striker by Monica McCarty available on Audible?

Yes — The Striker is available in paperback, Kindle, and Audible audiobook. The audiobook is a wonderful way to experience the story, especially for long drives or while doing something with your hands.

How does The Striker compare to other Highland Guard books?

The Striker has more emotional complexity than earlier books in the series. The betrayal storyline and the years-long separation give it a deeper, more bittersweet tone. Maggie is one of the strongest heroines in the entire series, and Eoin’s journey from blind judgment to full realization is one of the most satisfying character arcs Monica McCarty has written.

Is The Striker appropriate for adults?

es. Like all Highland Guard books, The Striker is an adult historical romance with mature content and is recommended for readers 18+.
