Oversized Crochet Hot Pad (Easy Double Thick Beginner Pattern)

Beginner Oversized Crochet Hot Pad

Oversized square crochet hot pad, beginner-friendly pattern.

This oversized crochet hot pad is the third piece in my cozy kitchen trio, following last week’s dishcloth pattern and the regular hot pad. It’s thick, sturdy, and perfect for those larger casserole dishes, baking sheets, and serving platters that don’t quite fit on a standard potholder.

This one has a little story behind it.

After finishing the regular hot pad, I looked at it and thought, “Well… this won’t cover a casserole dish.” Around the holidays, I’m always pulling big pans and platters out of the oven, and I wanted something large enough to protect my counters.

So I grabbed my yarn again and made an oversized version — quickly, simply, and without a pattern to follow. My creativity kicked in, and before I knew it, I had the perfect drying mat / casserole protector ready to use.

I didn’t plan for these to become a set, but that’s what happened: first the dishcloth, then the regular hot pad, and finally this oversized one that works beautifully with both. It’s durable, washable, and exactly the kind of kitchen project my grandma would have loved — practical, sturdy, and used every single day.

Why Make an Oversized Crochet Hot Pad?

  • Perfect for casserole dishes, baking sheets, and larger pots
  • Protects countertops from heat
  • Works as a drying mat for bigger items
  • Durable and washable (100% cotton)
  • Quick, beginner-friendly project
  • Pairs beautifully with the dishcloth + regular hot pad as a gift set

This is a great handmade gift for anyone who loves their kitchen — housewarmings, holidays, newlyweds, or your favorite home cook.

Materials You’ll Need

  • 100% cotton yarn (4 weight), two strands held together
  • Size 9 crochet hook (for the chain)
  • Size 7 crochet hook (for the rows)
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle

A Quick Note About Scissors

For best results, keep your yarn scissors only for yarn.
Fabric scissors, kitchen scissors, and yarn scissors all dull differently. Keeping each pair dedicated saves you a lot of frustration (and keeps your cuts smooth and clean).

Pro Tip for Beginners

Many beginners make the foundation chain too tight, which can make the rest of the project tricky to work into. Use a larger hook for the chain (size 9) to give it a little stretch, then switch to your regular hook for the rest of the dishcloth. It’ll keep your first row even and stress-free.

When you’re making an oversized crochet hot pad, the key is using the right yarn weight and hook size to get that thick, protective texture.

About Measuring Tapes

I don’t know about you, but I somehow manage to lose my measuring tapes just when I need them most. That’s why I buy them in bulk — it’s cheaper, and I always have a spare handy. Keeping one in my yarn bag, another near my worktable, and one tucked away in a drawer saves me from those “where did I put it this time?” moments.
