Learning to Crochet: Beginner Projects, Tools, and Kitchen Patterns

This space brings together my beginner crochet projects — and, over time, simple knitting and sewing ideas — all inspired by the cozy, story-filled side of My Tasteful Threads.

Welcome to My Crochet & Handmade Crafts Corner

Some of my favorite memories are sitting beside my grandma with yarn tangled across our laps, her patient hands showing me how to make the first loop on a hook. Later came the knitting needles, the hum of her old Singer machine, and the quiet satisfaction of creating something useful and meaningful from nothing.

This corner of My Tasteful Threads celebrates those same moments — simple stitches, soft yarn, and the joy of handmade things. Whether you’re brand new or rediscovering a forgotten hobby, I hope these projects feel like sitting down with a warm cup of tea and a basket of colorful yarn.

This Crochet & Handmade Crafts Corner is where everything comes together – beginner-friendly projects, the exact tools I use, and simple patterns designed to work as a set.

If you’re starting with one small project, you’ll quickly see how dishcloths, hot pads, oversized hot pads, and kitchen set naturally build on each other – one stitch at a time.

Start with one project. Stay for the set.

Beginner Crochet Projects

Crochet is where my crafting story began — one simple chain at a time.

I started learning crochet when I was five years old. I was sitting next grandma – she was in her rocking chair, and I was in my little rocking chair side by side and watched as she would crochet a hat. She handed me a little hook and guided me through a few steps one by one. My little hands wouldn’t work like hers did, but she calmed me and said, ‘one day at a time – tomorrow we try again’. And the next day we tried again. She was patient with me until I got it and was happy. Believe me it took a while. It was some time before I actually finished a project. My first project just a little mat. Simple flat one stitch only all the way through. Crooked and a little messed up but Grandma still praised me.

Beginner Crochet Projects (Designed to Work Together)

These beginner crochet patterns are intentionally designed as a cozy kitchen set – each project builds skills while creating something you’ll actually use.

👉 Tip: Many readers start with the dishcloth, then move through the hots pads to complete the full kitchen set.

If you’re brand new to crochet, I walk through the basic tools and how I first learned in my Learning to Crochet with Grandma and Essential Tools for Beginners post. One of the first lessons I learned from my grandma was that the yarn you choose matters just as much as the stitches. For kitchen projects like dishcloths and hot pads, cotton yarn is usually the best choice — and I explain why in Why Cotton Yarn is Best for Crochet Dishcloths and Kitchen Projects and I go into detail about the best choices for cotton yarn in Best Cotton Yarn for Crochet Dishcloths That Don’t Stretch or Fade. And choosing the right stitch matters just as much as the pattern, especially for kitchen items – I explain why in Crochet Stitches for Kitchen Items: What Works (and What Doesn’t).

Additionally, before choosing a stitch for kitchen projects, it helps to understand why thickness and density matter more than looks. I explain this in detail in Why Thicker Crochet Stitches Work Better for Hot Pads

Knitting Basics & Cozy Tools

Knitting teaches patience and rhythm — the kind of meditative movement that slows a busy day.

This craft feels different from crochet, especially at first. Some people say it’s harder, others swear it’s easier. I think it depends on where you start. Crochet came first for me, so it felt familiar right away. With needles, it’s not about speed — it’s about settling into the stitch and letting the rhythm guide you.

Simple Sewing for Everyday Living

Grandma’s sewing machine was where fabric scraps became aprons, curtains, or little gifts for neighbors. I’m continuing that tradition with simple sewing projects that focus on everyday use — pieces meant to be practical, comfortable, and made to last.

When I was growing up, I spent alot of time with Grandma. She would cook, crochet, knit and sew while I was there. I was the watcher. I learned by watching. She has this old sewing machine, that was a treadle sewing machine where your feet moved the needle. I would watch as she threaded the needed, prep the fabric, move the fabric through the machine and come out with a finished product to use or wear. (Grandma used to work in the factory where she sewed clothing for purchase. It was a big thing years ago.)

Handmade Gifts & Inspiration

There’s nothing quite like giving something you’ve made yourself — even the smallest project carries care in every stitch.

Tools I Use and Love (Beginner-Tested & Kitchen-Safe)

These are the exact tools I use across all crochet kitchen projects – chosen because they’re comfortable, durable, and made learning easier.

  • Ergonomic crochet hooks – reduce hand strain and help keep tension even
  • 100% cotton yarn – heat-safe, washable, and essential for kitchen projects.
  • Yarn bowl – keeps yarn clean and untangled while stitching
  • Yarn-only scissors – clean cuts and longer blade life
  • Tapestry needles & stitch markers- for neat finishing and easy row tracking

👉 Once you have these basics, you won’t need to re-buy tools as you move through dishcloths, hot pads, oversized hot pads, and full kitchen sets.

Stitch by Stitch, You’ll Find Your Rhythm

Every project starts the same way — one loop, one stitch, one quiet moment to yourself. Don’t worry about perfection. With each try, you’ll build skill, confidence, and a little collection of handmade things that make life cozier.
