Easy Double Thick Crochet Hot Pad Pattern (Beginner-Friendly)
Easy Double-Thick Crochet Hot Pad Pattern (Step-by-Step Guide)

A few months ago, I had to completely redo my kitchen — a surprise renovation thanks to a leak. During all the packing and sorting (and the piles labeled donate, keep, and garage sale), I somehow gave away nearly every potholder and hot pad I owned. I only realized it once I moved into a hotel and reached for one… and there were none.
So naturally, I grabbed some yarn, my hooks, and — with no pattern on hand and no energy to search for one — I made my own. This little hot pad was born at a tiny hotel desk, somewhere between construction noise, takeout meals, and my determination to have a kitchen that felt like home again.
Looking back now, it’s become one of my favorite beginner-friendly projects, and it pairs perfectly with the dishcloth pattern from last week.
Whether you want to make it for yourself or, gift it to someone who loves their kitchen, this one works up quickly and looks so pretty in a gift basket.
Why This Crochet Hot Pad Works So Well
To start with, it’s thick, sturdy, and protects your surfaces beautifully from heat.
On top of that, it uses breathable, washable cotton yarn, which means it holds up through everyday kitchen use.
Even better, this project makes a wonderful gift — whether it’s for a housewarming, Christmas, newlyweds, or your favorite home cook.
And here’s what I love most: it’s truly beginner-friendly with no fancy stitches required.
Plus, it works perfectly as part of a set: the dishcloth + the regular hot pad + the oversized hot pad all come together in a lovely handmade bundle.
My grandma made versions of these all the time. When they wore out, she’d simply repurpose them as dishcloths or toss them without a second thought — because handmade things were meant to be used and loved. In addition, my grandma always preferred cotton because it washes well.

- 100% cotton yarn (4 weight), 2 strands held together
- Crochet hooks: Size 9 (for chain) and size 7
- Scissors
- Tapestry Needle
- Measuring Tape
👉 Important Tip:
You might think using any pair of scissors is okay, or that it doesn’t matter. Well, it really does. When using scissors, have a pair for yarn only— never mix fabric, kitchen, or crafting scissors. This simple tip keeps the blades on all your scissors sharp so they glide through cotton easily.
Beginner-Friendly Pattern Notes
- This project is worked with two strands of yarn held together.
- The texture makes the hot pad thick and protective.
- Cotton yarn is important — acrylic can melt under heat.
- Keep your tension even to avoid warping.
Why I Use Cotton Yarn for Crochet Hot Pads
When making hot pads, cotton yarn is always the safest choice. Unlike acrylic, cotton won’t melt under heat and holds up beautifully in the kitchen. And if you’re new to cotton yarn, this quick guide explains why it’s ideal for hot pads and potholders:
